This is a vision indicator selected by the Nordic Council of Ministers. It relates to the target Responsible consumption and production under the area A green Nordic region.

Raw Material Consumption (RMC), often referred to as Material footprint, reflects the total amount of raw materials extracted to meet final consumption demands. Material footprint per capita thus describes the average use of materials for final consumption demands of a country, in tonnes per capita. It can be interpreted as an indicator of the material standard of living of an economy. The total material footprint is the sum of the footprints for biomass, fossil fuels, metal ores and non-metal ores.

The figures are retrieved from the UN Global Material Flows Database which does not have recurrent funding. Therefore, data is usually updated when here is need for a new, major UN report like the Global Resources Outlook. Also note that calculating the RMC is an extensive process that requires many data sources, some of which can take up to 30 months to produce.

In the table, the Nordic Region is comprised of the following countries/areas: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

Åland is included in the data for Finland.
